Lost an animal? What to do...

If you have lost an animal somewhere in the Jemez Valley area, on Highway 4 from  San Ysidro to the Valles Caldera, or to Fenton Lake on highway 126, please call us at 888-828-5822 x2 and give us the following information:

  • Owner Name
  • Owner Phone #s: Home/Cell
  • Other Contact Name & Numbers?
  • Animal name:
  • Description: (breed, color, weight, identifying items)
  • Collar color:
  • Is it chipped?
  • Location last seen:
  • Date Lost:

If you have a digital photo, email it to animalamigos@aol.com.  We send the information and picture to our members who live in the area and have them on the lookout for the animal

Prepare a poster to be posted around the location animal was last seen.  Depending on where that was, it might be good to post in the local post office, store or forest service office.  Information on poster:

  • Description of animal (color, size, name, collar description)
  • Location and date lost
  • If a reward is being offered
  • 2 phone numbers to contact you

Often times, lost animals are picked up by Jemez area visitors, and taken to Albuquerque, Santa Fe or Los Alamos animal shelters. You should contact all of these shelters, and determine the best way to notify them of the lost animal.

Found an animal? What to do...

1. Keep it safe by containing it.

2. Check to see if there is a collar/tag or any id info directly on the collar.

3. If so, contact the owner or vet listed on the rabies tag# for owner info.

4. If not, please contact JVAA for help. We have a microchip scanner.

5. Please don't expect us to immediately respond by coming to get the animal.
Our 888# is a voice message service only; all of us are volunteers getting the messages via email. We will help to try to identify where the animal belongs, but can't always take guardianship of the animal since we don't have a shelter and have very few foster homes, which are usually full.

6. Depending on our availability, we may ask you to keep the animal for a few days until some place can be found for the animal. If you are able to foster the animal for us, we will take care of everything else needed.

7.  In most cases, we will need you to transport the animal to a shelter or someplace that can care for the dog longer term.

8. We are diligent in our help, but do ask for your patience while we do "our thing" to help the animal.
